即使在食品加工厂的非食品区域，采用传统电机时，驱动系统不仅是减速电机本身，它至少还包含一条轴、多个轴承以及用于支撑减速电机的一个框架或者至少一个防转装置。根据安装情况，它还可能包含扭矩接头、驱动皮带或链条以及保护罩。污垢堆积物可能会通过气流、物料流及人流形成交叉污染源。此外，无法从系统中清除的食品残渣（例如：破碎的包装材料）会吸引害虫，这可能会成为另一个交叉污染途径。

Even in the non food area of the food processing plant, the drive system is not only the deceleration motor itself when the traditional motor is used, but it also contains at least one shaft, multiple bearings, a frame to support the retarding motor, or at least one anti rotating device. Depending on the installation conditions, it may also include torque connectors, drive belts or chains and protective covers. Fouling deposits may form a cross contamination source through airflow, material flow and human flow. In addition, food residues that can not be removed from the system (such as broken packaging materials) will attract pests, which may become another way of cross contamination.

The space is mainly located below the terminal box. According to the installation, there may be other narrow parts (for example, between the deceleration motor and the conveyor frame), which will limit the convenience of manual cleaning.

在工厂的食品区域，传统电机对食品安全的危害则更大。特别在中国的食品加工厂，由于没有专门设计的外壳对传统电机进行隔离，传统电机是食品行业中主要的潜在化学污染源之一：一是电机使用的润滑油滴漏，会污染食品；二是如果将电机安装在某个接触食品的位置上，也会污染食品；三是即使电机本身不与食品发生接触，其它必要部件（例如：轴承）很可能会发生接触，而轴承并非经过食品接触规范批准的材料，所以会污染食品。其它某些区域（例如：便于更换润滑油的凹头螺钉）也会聚集少量的污垢或液体。

而如果选择电动滚筒，几乎所有用于驱动皮带的部件都被装进了滚筒内，因此大大减少系统部件数量，从而减少系统内及系统上出现污垢堆积的情况。而且便于对卫生密封件及凹头螺钉进行检查和清洁。电动滚筒的不锈钢表面具有良好的饰面，在壳体上较为光滑，所以，不存在可能会滞留污垢或微生物的缺陷。同时，采用电动滚筒时，无法在现场执行换油所需要的维护作业，而是要在车间内执行这些作业，从而降低了由于实施不当而引起意外污染的风险。此外，使用电动滚筒可避免产品与其它润滑部件接触，例如：轴承。
